Youth Robotics
Robotics
Programs that provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and robotics instruction for youth are increasingly popular, offering hands-on learning opportunities that can inspire future careers in technology and engineering. The YMCA of the Roses in conjunction with Young Thinkers of York is able to assist your child in learning these concepts through programs provided at our TechRev facility at 301 W Market St, York PA.
FIRST LEGO League – RoboThinkers
RoboThinkers is a youth robotics program in York City that participates in the international FIRST LEGO League (FLL), a STEM program for students aged 10-14. The program aims to teach students about science, technology, engineering, and math, encouraging them to apply their learning for years to come. The FLL challenge consists of core values, project, robot design, and robot games, with core values focusing on teamwork, innovation, impact, inclusion, and fun. The robot games involve designing, building, and programming an autonomous robot to score points.
FIRST Tech Challenge – RoboMasters
Through the support of community grants, the RoboMasters FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) high school robotics team has been representing the City of York since 2021. The team, aged 14-18, competes in a head-to-head robotics challenge in an alliance format. The program teaches STEAM skills, engineering principles, and community outreach. Teams must raise funds, design and market their brand, and participate in community outreach for awards. Participants have access to millions of dollars in college scholarships. and a chance to participate in the state championship.
Jr Saturday Club (Ages 6 & 7)
The Jr. Saturday Club is an educational program focused on robotics and engineering, designed for students between the ages of 6 and 7. It offers practical instruction in coding, building, and engineering through the use of robots and other educational resources. The program is a pioneering initiative in York City, with the objective of offering educational robots and resources to underserved communities.
Saturday Club (Ages 8 – 15)
The Saturday Club is a youth robotics and engineering program for students aged 8-14, providing hands-on lessons in coding and engineering using robots and other learning tools. The program is the first of its kind in York City, aiming to provide educational robots and resources to underserved communities. Students build robots, learn about mechanics, and code them to complete challenges.

Introduction to Robotics Program- 8 Week Session
A new robotics program is coming to City Center YMCA! We are partnering with our friends at the Boys and Girls Club and hosting our 8 week session at their Sherman and Kathryn Hill Clubhouse on 116 S Water Street Lancaster, PA 17603.
The 8 Week Sessions are starting on Tuesday March 4th and will run for 8 Tuesdays until Tuesday April 22nd. The sessions will run for 1 hour from 6-7 p.m.
Students are welcome to come and check out the first session and if they want to commit to the other 7 sessions than the $1.00 membership fee will be waived and the participant would fill out the Boys and Girls Club membership application.
Our robotics 8 week session uses the Lego Spike Prime kit to offer students an engaging, hands-on way to learn the fundamentals of robotics, coding, and engineering. With this versatile set, students can construct a wide variety of robots and small projects, unleashing their creativity as they build everything from simple wheeled vehicles to complex machines with moving parts.
As they follow the step-by-step building instructions, students develop their spatial reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail. The real magic begins when they bring their creations to life through code! Using the intuitive Spike app, students learn the basics of programming as they make their robots move, react to sensors, and complete challenges.
Through this process, they develop computational thinking skills and an understanding of core coding concepts like loops, variables, and conditional statements. The experience of building a tangible machine and then controlling it through code creates a powerful link between the physical and digital worlds.
