Blood Pressure Self Monitoring
Take Action to Improve Heart Health
According to the American Heart Association, nearly half (46%) of adults have high blood pressure in this country. High blood pressure is a key, modifiable, risk factor for both heart disease and stroke, which are two of the leading causes of death in the United States.
In response to this critical health care issue, the YMCA’s Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program is designed to help adults with hypertension lower and manage their blood pressure.
Program Description:
- Evidence-based program
- 16-week
- 2 personalized consultations per month with a Health Heart Ambassador
- Monthly nutrition and cardiovascular health learning sessions
- Develop the habit of routinely self-monitoring blood pressure
- Gain awareness of triggers that elevate blood pressure
Goals:
- Reduction in blood pressure
- Better blood pressure management
- Increased awareness of triggers that elevate blood pressure
- Enhanced knowledge to develop healthier eating habits
Eligibility:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be diagnosed with high blood pressure
- Not have experienced a recent cardiac event
- Not have atrial fibrillation or other arrhythmias
- Not be at risk for lymphedema
Cost:
- Free to members
- $50 nonmembers

If you seek relief from arthritis pain or just want to be active, the Arthritis Foundation’s Walk With Ease program will teach you how to safely make physical activity part of your everyday life.
Program Description
- Evidence-based program
- 6 weeks
- 3 health education and physical activity sessions per week
- Physical activity includes stretching and walking
- Includes pre and post program health and fitness assessment
Goals:
- Reduce arthritis symptoms such as pain, stiffness, and fatigue
- Improve strength, balance, and walking pace
- Reduce disability
- Increase confidence in the ability to manage arthritis
Eligibility
- Adults with arthritis
- Adults who want to increase their physical activity levels and are able to be on their feet for at least 10 minutes without increased pain.
- Adults with other chronic health conditions—such as diabetes and heart disease—who want to be more active.
Cost:
- Free to members
- $50 nonmembers
