Youth Swim Lessons

Youth Swim Lessons

Our Youth Swim program consists of 6 levels, each focusing on a different part of the YMCA Swim Continuum.

  • Water Acclimation focuses on increasing comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance.
  • Water Movement focuses on encouraging forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently.
  • Water Stamina develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages.
  • Stroke Introduction introduces basic stroke techniques in freestyle and backstroke, and reinforces water safety through treading water.
  • Stroke Development introduces breaststroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water.
  • Stroke Mechanics refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Each class is 45 minutes long, and there are a total of 7 classes (one per week) per session. Recommended for Ages 6-12.

Level 1 & 2 - Water Acclimation & Movement

Lampeter Strasburg Branch
9/9/26 - 10/26/26
VIEW

Water Acclimation & Movement is a foundational YMCA swim lesson designed to help swimmers become comfortable, confident, and safe in the water while developing essential beginning swimming skills. This combination class is ideal for participants who are building their comfort in the aquatic environment and beginning to develop purposeful movement through the water.

Lessons focus on water adjustment, comfort, balance, body position, floating, breath control, kicking, and basic arm movements. Swimmers are encouraged to practice entering and exiting the water safely, putting their face in the water, blowing bubbles, floating with support and independently as appropriate, and changing positions from front to back.

As swimmers gain confidence, they work on gliding, kicking, coordinated arm and leg movements, and moving short distances through the water. Instructors provide appropriate support and gradually encourage greater independence as each swimmer demonstrates readiness.

The class also introduces important water-safety and self-awareness skills, including following instructor directions, recognizing personal limits, and responding appropriately to basic safety situations.

The overall goal of Water Acclimation & Movement is to create a positive and encouraging introduction to swimming while helping participants progress from simply being comfortable in the water to moving through it with increasing confidence, control, and independence.

Level 5 & 6 - Stroke Development & Mechanics

Lancaster Branch
9/14/26 - 10/26/26
VIEW

Stroke Development & Mechanics is a skill-building YMCA swim lesson designed for swimmers who are ready to move beyond basic stroke introduction and develop greater technique, efficiency, coordination, and endurance. This combination class focuses on improving the quality of each stroke while helping swimmers become stronger, more confident, and more consistent in the water.

Lessons emphasize the fundamentals and mechanics of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, as appropriate for each swimmer’s ability. Participants work on proper body alignment, streamlined position, kicking technique, arm recovery and entry, pull patterns, timing, and coordinated breathing. Instructors provide individualized feedback and drills to help swimmers identify areas for improvement and develop more efficient movement.

Swimmers also practice starts, turns, push-offs, underwater streamlining, and transitions as appropriate. Drills and repeated swimming sets help participants apply proper technique while gradually increasing distance and endurance.

Water safety and responsible pool behavior continue to be reinforced throughout the class. Swimmers learn to recognize fatigue, maintain control while swimming, and make safe decisions in the aquatic environment.

The goal of Stroke Development & Mechanics is to help swimmers develop technically sound strokes, improve swimming efficiency and endurance, and build the skills necessary to progress toward more advanced swimming, fitness, or competitive opportunities.

Level 5 - Stroke Development

York Branch
9/14/26 - 10/26/26
VIEW

Stroke Development is designed for swimmers who have established basic swimming skills and are ready to strengthen and refine their swimming strokes. The class focuses on improving technique, coordination, endurance, and confidence while helping swimmers become more efficient and capable in the water.

Lessons provide continued practice of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, based on the swimmer’s developmental level. Participants work on proper body position, kicking, arm patterns, breathing, stroke timing, and coordination. Instructors use drills and guided practice to help swimmers improve individual components of each stroke and then incorporate those skills into full-stroke swimming.

Swimmers also develop push-offs, streamlining, starts, turns, and underwater movement as appropriate. Distance and repetition are gradually increased to build stamina while maintaining attention to proper technique.

Water safety remains an important component of the class. Participants continue to practice safe pool habits, follow directions, recognize their physical limits, and develop the ability to swim with greater independence.

The goal of Stroke Development is to help swimmers become stronger, more efficient, and more confident swimmers while preparing them for advanced stroke work, increased endurance, swim conditioning, or future competitive swimming.

Level 6 - Stroke Mechanics

Shrewsbury Branch
9/9/26 - 10/23/26
VIEW

Stroke Mechanics is designed for swimmers who have a solid foundation in swimming and are ready to focus on improving the technical quality, efficiency, and consistency of their strokes. The class emphasizes how the body moves through the water and helps swimmers develop more effective swimming patterns.

Lessons focus on the mechanics of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, according to the swimmer’s ability and readiness. Participants work on body alignment, streamline position, kicking technique, arm placement, pull patterns, recovery, breathing, stroke timing, and coordination. Instructors use targeted drills and demonstrations to help swimmers understand how small adjustments can improve their overall performance and efficiency.

Swimmers may also practice starts, turns, push-offs, underwater streamlining, breakouts, and stroke transitions. Repetition and technique-focused swimming allow participants to develop muscle memory while learning to maintain proper form as distance and intensity increase.
